Hello
and a very warm welcome to Brentwood RFC’s U6’s.
Together with the other dedicated (and hardworking coaches), Iain,
Steve and Keith, we look forward to meeting any new players and
parents at our sessions on Sunday mornings, starting at 10.30am.
To be eligible for the U6 age group, children must be under 6
on 1 September 2008. There’s no minimum age, we’ve
had a few 3 year olds join in, so all are welcome, regardless
of ability. There is normally a whiteboard outside the clubhouse
with a plan of the ground showing where we will be training that
day. If not, just ask around for the U6s or myself and hopefully
someone will point you to us.
Sessions last about 1 hour and our primary focus is to ensure
the children have fun, whilst learning some of the basics of rugby
and good sportsmanship. At the same time the children get plenty
of exercise and enjoy the fresh Essex air.
Until the children reach the U10 age group, they all play “tag
rugby” which is non-contact i.e. no tackling. The kids wear
tag belts which have 2 velcro tags, which can be pulled off to
simulate a tackle. The children wear basic PE type kit, appropriate
to the weather (i.e. wrap them up warm!) - nothing specific to
rugby at this stage. Footwear is the same, appropriate to the
weather – if your child already has boots (from football
at school for example), these will be useful for when the pitches
are wet and muddy. If they haven't already got boots, I'd suggest
trainers until they decide they like rugby. The only other item
that I recommend bringing is a juice bottle, as the children get
quite thirsty during the sessions.
Shortly after the children join the sessions, i.e. not critical
for the first session, but assuming they like it, as soon as possible
after please, we need you to complete two forms. Both these forms
currently have links on the homepage of this website for you to
download / print.
Brentwood RFC Membership Pack:
This to register your child as a club member. Just print off and
fill in pages 3 and 4. We don’t charge children whilst they
are in the U6s, so ignore page 2 about paying.
RFU Young Player Registration Form:
This is to register your child with the rugby governing body,
the RFU. This is important as it ensures your child is covered
by the RFU insurance policy in case of injury. Again, just print
off and complete – ignore the bit about photos, they are
not required at this age.
Either bring the completed forms with you or post direct to the
membership secretary Gaynor Sproul (address on the BRFC form).
I normally have blank copies with me on a Sunday in case you get
stuck or forget.
Finally check the “Forum” section of this website
for any last minute news or updates, i.e. if training is cancelled
due to the weather.
In summary, we cater for all ages (under 6) and all abilities,
and parents and children are most welcome – just come along
and introduce yourselves.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to email or
phone, otherwise I will hopefully see you soon.
Yours in rugby,
James Metcalfe
