Sunday 24th January Match Report

Brentwood Under 11s travelled the short distance to Chelmsford RFC on Sunday, where they took all of their available squad of boys.

The first half of the first game was a very tight affair with the hosts probably having the better of the exchanges and running the ball with pace. The Chelmsford backs showed their slick handling skills in scoring two good tries. It seemed that Brentwood were still asleep and turned around at half time 10-0 down.
The second half saw Brentwood put the Chelmsford try line under constant pressure but this was to no avail due to Chelmsford’s excellent defence. A breakaway try gave Chelmsford a 15-0 win but Brentwood would be encouraged by their second half performance. Over the whole game it would be fair to say Chelmsford deserved their win.

The second game was a totally different affair. Brentwood started the game at a high pace and soon put the Chelmsford defence to the test. Brentwood had the ball over the line but knocked on before touching down. From the resulting drop out, Toby Tierney took the ball at pace to score. He scored a second try after putting the Chelmsford fly half under pressure just before the half time whistle.
The second half was one-way traffic. Adam Piggott scored four great tries where he showed his strength running with the ball and superb support play. Winger Robert Acheson showed his pace finishing off a fine backs move by scoring in the corner. From a great forward drive the ball was passed out to Mason Wright who was playing in the back for this fixture. He powered his way over the Chelmsford line for his try taking two tacklers with him. Chelmsford kept going to the end but this was definitely Brentwood’s game.
Final score: Chelmsford 0; Brentwood 40

This was a good performance by the whole squad and showed the strength in depth of Brentwood Under 11s. The backs running and forward power play throughout the second game was superb. This was a good fixture for both clubs and many thanks to Chelmsford for being such great hosts.
