Brentwood Under 10’s travelled to Romford and Gidea Park this Sunday for a tri-angular fixture against Romford and South Woodham Ferrers.
Brentwood’s first game was against a Romford side that are rejuvenated this season with the addition of some new recruits. Unlike previous fixtures this season, Brentwood got off to a good start and the team were playing with great confidence. Brentwood ran and passed the ball well, linking the forwards and backs, and in a flowing move Mason Wright broke through the home defence to score the deserved first try. Brentwood won the ball back from the restart and went straight on the attack again. Good passing from the backs saw Mason Wright go over for his second try of the game. Both teams were now competing fiercely for every ball and from a ruck in the middle of the field Daniel Suttle broke for the Romford try line, stopped just short he had great support from Hugo Mayo who took the pop pass and crashed over the try line.

Half time: Romford 0; Brentwood 15

The second half began with Romford on the attack. They ran the ball well but lost out in midfield when they dropped the ball. Sensing another opportunity to score, Brentwood took the ball on and eventually Toby Tierney broke through to score. Brentwood remained on the attack and another flowing passing move resulted in Patrick Underwood going over for a try. It was Patrick Underwood that completed the scoring for Brentwood with another well worked try. This was a great performance by Brentwood but Romford’s contribution to a great game of rugby should also be noted.

Final result: Romford: 0; Brentwood 30

In the second game of the day Brentwood played South Woodham Ferrers knowing that this would probably be a much closer game than the first. This proved to be the case, with both sides tacking excellently during a very tight game. At the start of the game the bigger SWF team took the ball on well in close contact but good defence by Brentwood stopped them crossing the line. Eventually the pressure told, and a SWF forward went over for a try under a group of players from both sides. Brentwood tried to get back into the game by moving the ball and from a ruck around the half way line, James Elms scorched away down the touchline and scored a great individual try in the corner that enabled Brentwood to turn around at half time with the scores even.

Half time: South Woodham Ferrers 5; Brentwood 5

Both teams had opportunities to score at the beginning of the second half but once again the defence of both teams kept each other out. After a period of sustained pressure, Brentwood eventually broke through the SWF forwards and Daniel Suttle used his strength and pace to score and put Brentwood in the lead. SWF came straight back on the attack and scored from some loose Brentwood play to bring the scores level again. It was not until the last minute that Brentwood scored the winning try of the game. Toby Tierney tackled a SWF player and the ball was dislodged, he immediately took the ball on and just made the line for the score before a SWF tackle came in. This was a game where both sides played really well and the parents of both teams appreciated the quality of the rugby on display.

Final result: South Woodham Ferrers 10; Brentwood 15

This was a really good Brentwood squad performance where the tacking, passing and running with the ball showed just how far the boys have progressed. Many thanks also to Romford for staging and organising this triangular fixture.
